
Location:
Mozambique, Province of Sofala, city of Beira, neighborhoods of Muavi, Munhava and Goto.
Objective:
This project initiated in 2004 aims to improve living conditions for the inhabitants of 3 poor neighborhoods of Beira. Baptized “MUMUGO,” it relies on community organizations to lead concrete actions in different domains. A transversal action of reinforcement of civil society is an integral part of the project, in a perspective of sustainable development.
Actions
Health and hygiene: Two types of activities are planned in this domain:
- public health education based on home visits and small group sessions (the problematic of HIV/SIDA is the object of particular attention);
- actions of improvement of sanitary conditions through latrine campaigns, household garbage pickup days and canal cleaning, renovation of fountains and the construction of a health center.
Education and socialization: the activities target 3 types of population:
For children:
- Pedagogical training for teachers and instructors of educational establishments.
- Renovation of classrooms in two schools.
- School supply campaigns to promote easier access to school for underperforming children.
For adolescents:
- Socio-educational activities aimed at the acquisition of knowledge of various subjects.
- Athletic or cultural activities (dance, singing, theater, etc.).
- Activities for stimulating awareness of professions and for professional orientation.
For adults :
- Literacy courses.
Professional training and improvement of income
- Professional training courses and assistance towards internships.
- Improvement of income through the acquisition of fowl or caprids, as well as the development of market gardening.
Support for initiatives and community groups
- Support for 2 groups in each neighborhood (inhabitant commissions, youth groups, parent associations, women’s associations, etc.) through training seminars and the introduction of collaboratory frameworks (community actors, associative or public).
- Fitting out of facilities in the neighborhoods in order to accommodate community activities.
Institutional support for 2 local partners
- Analysis of competencies, of practices and methodologies in use.
- Structural analysis, oriented toward the organization and functioning of entities.
- Execution of a training plan.
Direct beneficiaries: 12,000 persons in the 3 neighborhoods
Indirect beneficiaries: 54,000 inhabitants

- The project is being carried out with 2 Mozambican NGOs: ADC and TRIMODER.
- The principal institutional partner is the Municipal Council of Beira.
