Sustainable development in agriculture: Province of Sofala

Location: Mozambique, Province of Sofala, Districts of Buzi, Dondo, Chibabava, and Nhamatanda.

Objective:
Initiated in 2005, this project aims to reduce poverty in rural areas by guaranteeing peasants their right to land and by reinforcing their capacity to manage natural resources and to sustainably improve their agricultural production.

Actions
:

Participative training in agriculture
In-depth
training in and participative experimentation of production methods, of transformation and of agricultural commercialization is realized over 2 years with 500 farmers of a district and the results will be revealed to the other districts through exchanges between farmers. Support for micro projects of agriculture and breeding based on positive experiences will allow around 1,200 families to appreciably augment their production and their agricultural revenues.

Legalization of land and management of natural resources
Participative work of boundary demarcation and registration in the land register of village territories avoids the monopolizing of land by large investors and guarantees access to land and natural resources for 25,000 families of small farmers in 4 districts. At the same time, the communities learn to design plans for managing natural resources.

Direct beneficiaries: 1,200 families

Indirect beneficiaries: 25,000 families (125,000 persons) in 8 beneficiary communities.
