Environment and Sustainable Development

The protection of the environment and of biodiversity are now major areas of concern in the world and thus for ESSOR as well.

For the most part, we intervene in contexts where the environment is either highly degraded (Northeast Brazil, Cape Verde), or still somewhat preserved but threatened by the development of human activities (Amazon, Africa).

To help rural populations find solutions for their legitimate needs regarding the improvement of their quality of life, while continuing to preserve their environment: this is the principle of sustainable development and one of the challenges ESSOR has taken on.

ESSOR's activities in this area are directly linked to rural development work and consist primarily of the:

Promotion of Agro-ecology

Collective thought and experimentation with farmers using agro-ecological techniques for soil fertilisation management (composting, seed rotation, the use of leguminous plants as a green fertilizer), weed control, and the prevention of diseases and pests (natural insecticides).

Promotion of agro-forestry by, for example, the combination of fruit trees and forest species with commercial crops such as pepper.

Management of Forest Resources

Support of rural communities for the inventory of natural resources, in particular, forests.  This inventory allows for the establishment of a long-term management plan and for the evaluation of tree cuttings and the fragile zones to be preserved.

Establishment of village committees for natural resource management that are responsible, in coordination with local government, for the implementation of these management plans.

Support for outside activists in the improvement of forest ecosystem management, in particular the management of the naturally occurring Açai (euterpe oleracea) palm groves in the Brazilian Amazon.

Reforestation

Agricultural support for the creation of collective or individual nurseries and the planting of fruit trees or noble species such as teak or mahogany.

Environmental Education

Organisation of an awareness campaign in schools and rural communities regarding the environment, water, waste management, and the importance of forests.
